Candida Overgrowth: Identifying the Root Cause of Chronic Fungal Infections
By Carolyn Leigh, Registered Nutritionist BSc N.Med FNTP
Candida is a word often associated with thrush, but for many, this common yeast
can cause far more widespread and chronic symptoms when it transitions from a
harmless resident to an opportunistic overgrowth in the digestive tract. Medically
known as Candidiasis, this condition is a key area of specialism as it frequently
underlies symptoms of fatigue, digestive distress, and poor immunity.
What is Candida Overgrowth?
The human microbiome is a complex ecosystem where commensal (beneficial)
bacteria and yeast (primarily Candida species) typically coexist in a state of
“competitive inhibition.” In a healthy individual, commensal bacteria maintain
environmental conditions that prevent yeast from transitioning from a harmless
colonizer to an opportunistic pathogen.
Overgrowth occurs when the delicate balance of the body is disrupted, allowing
the yeast to metamorphosize into a very aggressive yeast fungal bacteria which
can spread throughout the body even penetrating the intestinal lining (leaky gut).
This can lead to a host of systemic symptoms that are often misdiagnosed or
attributed to stress.
Common Signs That Candida May Be the Root Cause
Candida overgrowth symptoms are notoriously varied and can affect multiple
systems in the body. If you experience several of the following, a root-cause
investigation may be necessary:
• Persistent Fatigue, recurring flue type symptoms and Brain Fog: Feeling tired
regardless of sleep and struggling with poor memory, concentration, and mood
swings.
• Digestive Issues: Chronic bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhoea, or symptoms
resembling Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
• Recurrent Infections: Frequent oral thrush, genital infections, vaginal yeast
infections (Vaginitis), or fungal infections of the skin and nails.
• Strong Sugar Cravings: The Candida yeast thrives on sugar and can signal the
brain for more.
• Immune Dysfunction: Frequent colds, allergies, or chemical sensitivities.
My Approach
Why do people develop chronic Candida overgrowth? My clinical experience and
diagnostic testing point to several key underlying imbalances:
1. Antibiotic Use: A course of broad-spectrum antibiotics can wipe out beneficial
gut flora, leaving the yeast population unchecked.
2. High-Sugar/Processed Diet: A diet rich in refined carbohydrates and sugar
provides the ideal food source for Candida to multiply rapidly.
3. Chronic Stress: High levels of the stress hormone cortisol can suppress the
immune system, reducing its ability to keep yeast in check.
4. Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of certain vitamins and minerals can impair
mucosal immunity, which acts as the body’s first line of defence against
yeast.
The Role of Specialist Diagnostic Testing
For effective treatment, guessing is simply not an option. As a specialist in
identifying the root cause, comprehensive diagnostic tests are utilized through
accredited UK laboratories.
These tests allow us to:
• Confirm the presence and species of Candida in the digestive tract.
• Assess the level of inflammation and its impact on your digestive health.
• Identify other co-existing imbalances (e.g., bacterial overgrowth, parasite
infections) that are suppressing your immune function.
• Evaluate underlying conditions such as adrenal exhaustion or thyroid dysfunction
that may contribute to chronic illness.
Targeted Nutritional Therapy for Candida
Once the root cause is precisely identified through testing, targeted Nutritional
Therapy protocol is utilized. This is not a one-size-fits-all plan but a holistic
approach focused on three pillars:
1. Starvation: Eliminating the yeast’s primary fuel source through a targeted
dietary plan.
2. Removal: Utilising specific, clinically relevant antifungal nutrients to gently and
safely manage the overgrowth.
3. Rebuilding: Restoring the integrity of the gut lining and repopulating the
digestive tract with a diverse and healthy microbiome to prevent recurrence.
